section vi. · the longtail
Riese & Müller Multitinker2 Silent
A compact longtail with a real rear bench for one or two kids. Same Bosch ecosystem as the Load4 next door, at a meaningfully smaller size.
Why this bike
The longer decision document, with everything we considered and ruled out across the longtail and compact-cargo space, lives at choosing a longtail. This page covers what's specific to this purchase: the trim, the dealer, and the trade-offs we accepted.
Why the Multitinker2 Silent specifically
The Multitinker2 lineup ships in four trims:
| Trim | Motor | Drivetrain | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Family | Performance Line PX (95 Nm) | Nexus 5 + chain | Cheapest, but chain |
| Touring | Cargo Line (100 Nm) | Derailleur + chain | No shift-at-standstill |
| Silent | Cargo Line (100 Nm) | Nexus 5 + Gates belt | What we bought |
| Vario | Cargo Line (100 Nm) | Enviolo CVT + belt | Enviolo non-starter |
The Silent is the only trim that combines the Bosch Cargo Line motor (100 Nm baseline, 120 Nm with the May 2026 Performance Upgrade 2.0 once we toggle it in Flow), the Shimano Nexus Inter-5E internal gear hub (click-detent shifting, shift-at-standstill, e-bike rated), and the Gates Carbon Drive CDX belt. That bundle is the reason the Silent costs what it does and the reason no other US-shipping longtail under $9K matches it.
Why Propel
We chose Propel Bikes (Brooklyn, NY) over other R&M dealers despite paying full MSRP because service relationship continuity matters most after R&M's US exit. Propel is R&M's first US dealer (founded 2011 by Chris Nolte, a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Business) and a Bosch-only shop. Pricing across all authorized US dealers landed within $200 of MSRP; the bike is build-to-order from Germany. Paying MSRP at the highest-volume R&M-specialized US dealer was the call we landed on.
What we're giving up
- Class 3 speed. Class 1 caps at 20 mph. Fine for family rides; the Load4 covers solo Class 3 needs.
- Rohloff specifically. The Nexus Inter-5E is shift-at-standstill and click-shift like Rohloff, but with five speeds (263% range) instead of fourteen (526%). Adequate for flat Grand Rapids; tight for sustained loaded climbs above 8% grade.
- 20" wheels. Same wheel size as the Tern GSD that Ashley rejected, but Multitinker geometry is different and she test-rode and approved.
What we're getting
- A bike Ashley feels confident on fast, with low CG and ergonomics that fit her.
- One or two kids on the back, with proper rails and footrests.
- The same Bosch ecosystem as our Load4.
- Belt drive across both bikes.
- R&M build quality.
- A meaningful service relationship at Propel as R&M winds down US presence.
The Multicharger3 Rohloff HS would have been the dream-bike answer at $13K. The Multitinker2 Silent is the right answer for our actual life.
How we use it
Pending delivery
Bike ordered April 2026; expected delivery Q3. Usage notes start once Ashley has put real miles on it: school runs, farmers market trips with our older son on the rear bench, family rides alongside the Load4.
Modifications
Pending delivery
Modification log starts once the bike arrives.
